Treasure Planet

I would pay $3.00 to watch this movie.

Treasure Island in space. Yep, you heard it. Is this a recipe for disaster or what? Well, surprisingly, the movie turned out to be pretty good. The animation was gorgeous, and the plot was, well, tried and true.
Although lacking in the grotesque, as most American animations are, the movie still handled the story pretty well. “Silver”, the cybernetic re-do of “Long John Silver” was a little bit too friendly and non-threatening for me, but his vile pirate underlings were plenty vile, as far as a gutless American kids’ movie can make characters vile.
The real shining point of the movie was the character of the ship’s captain, a female cat-alien with the character of a perfectionist British imperial captain. The unfortunate part of her character, as my friend Cathy pointed out to me, was that, as the only significant female role in the movie, she still had to be “validated” by romance with a significant male character (the eccentric astrophysicist dog-alien). Again with the lack of guts on the part of American animation companies. I mean, seriously, is it just not possible for the American psyche to grasp the possibility of a female command figure being, gasp, ALONE? Why must the lone wolf always be male? I am getting a little tired of our toothless children’s films. Art without an edge is not art, darn it.
Now that I’ve gotten over my little rant: Overall, this movie was well-paced and well-directed. I’d suggest this film for anybody who likes animations.
