Archaicus
Archaicus

Archaicus Archaicus is an atmospheric black metal band formed in 2001 with 2 official demos: 'Beneath the Horizon' (2003), and 'The Elder Scape' (2004).

The first demo, 'Beneath the Horizon', does not really explicitly resemble any other band's style. It is a mixture of dark sounding ambient/classical guitar parts interspersed with semi-'De Mysteriis...' sounding black metal and possibly a black/thrash metal feeling in some moments. The first demo's medieval imagery is slightly evident in the music, but more obvious on 'The Elder Scape' where the band adopted a more Bathory influenced sound, yet still with some of the speed and pace of the first demo. Archaicus is NOT associated with any pagan black metal bands. The medieval imagery in the early days of the band was simply used to evoke, in aesthetic terms, the atmosphere and duality/rivalry of holiness/evil in that period; nothing more.

It should be noted that there is another demo from 2004 entitled 'Riddle of the Paths' that was never spread. The reason the early demos were never released in higher numbers is because Vortigern ('V') refused all offers from labels. During 2006 a re-recording of the 2002 track 'The Vast Flame' took place which was added as a bonus track to the 'Beneath the Horizon' demo. During c. 2008 'V' participated in The One's 'I, Master' LP and collaborated with the cult project Extinction. Nevertheless, over the years material has accumulated for Archaicus and this is due to be recorded in 2011. When the new material is unveiled it is possible that early material may see the light of day again in some capacity other than the self-released tapes from the early years.
